K2 Exo bag.png

Features: Top pocket. Hanging loop. Removable phone pouch. Key holder. Ergonomic harness. Durable rip-stop fabric. Rubberized bottom. (Oooh-err Madam!)

Of all of the bags on review here this is our favorite so if you want you don’t have to read any further. For £30 you get the best looking, most solidly constructed, most comfortable and easy to use skate bag available today.
Lets start with getting your skates in and out. It’s very straightforward if you have an ounce of common sense. The skates go on wheels together, cuffs down and the fabric cross holder clips them in. The cross holder can also be zipped away in it’s own stash pocket to enable you to use the bag for other uses too.
There is plenty of easily accessible internal volume for pads, water and stuff without the bag being too unnecessarily large. Inside is a divider and a little organizer for tickets, passports and money. Ideal for that skating trip away. Keys can be attached to a really long fob so you don’t end up rummaging around.
We really like the coin / stuff pocket. It holds its structure when it’s unzipped so you can see what your after. It’s ideally placed right at the top.
Well done K2 for adding a phone holder. I always miss a call by the time I have found my phone at the bottom of my bag. We also love the rubbery base of the bag that resists wear, dirt and water.
Zips are well made with large grippers, construction and fabrics are top notch too.

Salomon ILS Active
£35
Lightweight day bag
Dimensions: 41 X 27 X 12 cm
Weight: 660g / 1 lb 7 oz (Very light)
Volume: 20L

skate active bag.jpg

Features: Mesh side pockets. A harness construction which follows the neck / shoulder anatomy. Perforated foam shoulder straps with foam comfort back pads and Reflective patch. Hanging hook. Tough 600D plastic fabric.

There is enough room in the Salomon Active for a set of rollerblades, your skate pads a helmet and… well that’s about it. With really careful packing you might manage a small bottle of water and your keys.
It takes a while to work out how the skates actually strap on using the snap on locks under the fold down cover. In fact there are two ways but it’ll take a degree in astrophysics to work out either. Once you eventually work it out the skates stay in place quite securely.
The bag has a three quarter zip to get inside the main compartment. A smaller inner pocket would be nice so coins and keys don’t rattle their way to the bottom. An annoyance that will get you every time you get to the front door and have to empty the entire bag. The bag does have two mesh side pockets but they are open and useless for storing anything valuable.
The Active is small and light in it’s favour. Ideal for a couple of hours in the park, or to put your trainers in while you are on a Sunday Stroll.
Quality in our opinion could be better. I’ve had three over the years and all of them developed failures in the stitches somewhere. For £35 we’d like to see more thought gone into the design and construction.

Salomon ILS Grab Bag
£35
Larger weekend / picnic bag
Dimensions: 48 X 30 X 19 cm
Weight: 850g / 1 lb 14 oz
Volume: 30L

skate grab bag.jpg

Features foam comfort back pads. Key holder. Reflective patch. Isotherm compartment. External zipped lid pocket. Easy access front pocket. Padded side pockets. Organizer panel. Comfortable padded shoulder straps. Hanging hook. Tough 600D plastic fabric.

Booked up for that weekend of skating in Paris? Want to travel light with your skates but still have enough room to bring home a couples of bottle of vin rouge. Or perhaps it’s a lazy day in the park. Need a bag for your skates plus room for a picnic and blanket? No problem! Enter the Salomon Grab bag.
The Grab bag is perhaps too large and bulky for a street skate or for time when you only need to carry your skates and pads but it really comes into it’s own when you need a bit of room for other stuff. It’s full of easy to get to pockets, stashes and more pockets, including an accessible top pocket for tools and spares and a silver foil lined one to keep your sandwiches cool! Wow. Their is even a long ‘clip on a string’ designed for holding keys. Nice one designers.
Skates go in easily enough on the side straps. The heel brake takes a bit of negotiation though. Like the active you need to work out how the skates ‘go in’ but it much more obvious. Watch out walking up and down escalators, it’s easy to forget you have ‘wings’ and end up bashing people all the way home.
The bag is really comfortable to wear and quality is good. Perhaps a bit more hard wearing protection on the bottom surface would be good. Personally I don’t like the colour but that’ll change for the next season anyway. £35 well spent we think.

Camelbak Flashflo
£30
Belt pack / hydration bladder.
Dimensions: 28cm x 22cm
Capacity: 1.6l
Weight with water: 900gms
www.camelback.com

Flashflo.jpg

Features: Removable Hydroflo water bladder and non-drip suck valve. External pocket with inner mesh dividers. Attached secure key holder. Reflective panels. Hanging hook. Option colours in manly grey or girly blue.

Personally I hate skating with a bag on my back for any period of time, especially on a street skate when Im going to get all sweaty and hot. The Camelbak Flashflow is a better alternative than a backpack when you really want to travel light but still need enough room for keys, MP3 player and wallet.
It’s ideally suited to carry enough water to keep hydrated on a long street-skate too. Its so easy to use when you’re thirsty. The non drip hose can be screwed up in your pocket, unraveled and used quickly as you go along and then shoved back in your pocket without even having to take your eyes from the road. Much easier than having your Evian bottle in your backpack but not having enough time at the traffic light stop to get bag off, rummage, drink, repack and strap on again before the lights go green. The bladder can be rinsed and stored in the freezer to keep germ free.
The belt is a comfortable click-lock design. Its good enough to strap a light pair of flip-flops too. Quality of construction is very good. We like the reflective material on the front. Good for late night skating. Zips are strong and the bag is machine washable.
